Travel is a 3-part compilation of hip hop poems, short stories/essays, and a character play titled "A Degree of Difficulty". This collection of
literary pieces provides a thought provoking look at the psychological,
social, political, and economic views of peoples raised in the
inner-cities. The stunning lyrics in the poetry provide a
fascinating look into the hip-hop culture, addressing a wide range of
subjects including, parenthood, drugs, media, love and racism; all
presented in an interesting and humorous context. The
semi-autobiographical short stories/essays are grounded in the everyday
reality of the youth who embody the hip-hop lifestyle and allows the
reader to gain a better understanding of the daily challenges they
face. Finally, the play titled "A Degree of Difficulty" is
centered squarely on the struggles of dysfunctional families living in
the ghettos of America, and the dangerous cycle of poverty that many
blacks encounter. The play takes an insightful look at one young
black teen, being raised without his father in the heart of Newark, New
Jersey, as he approaches adulthood during his final year in high
school. This play is a must read for all who are raised without a
father or those who need to gain a better understanding of fatherless
children.
Those
who recognize themselves as members of the hip-hop nation will identify
with many if not all the subjects highlighted throughout the text.
For others who do not fully understand the hip-hop generation, this
collection undoubtedly help bridge the gap between the two worlds, and
allow for an open and honest dialogue. In short, Words Travel is a
movement with hopes that the messages shared within this text will
improve the lives of all who choose to read it. |
